King James Version of The Bible.

The Word of God in the English language.

The Interlinear Bible Hebrew-Greek-English. (Jay P. Green, Sr.)

I do not recommend the interlinear bible as a replacement for the King James Version. However, it has been a great help to me as it contains God’s preserved inspired word in the original languages. The four volumes display all of the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek words of the Bible in the Masoretic Hebrew Text and the Received Greek Text (Textus Receptus), with literal, accurate English meanings placed directly under each original word in interlinear form, with Strong’s Concordance numbers over each original word.

I highly recommend obtaining it in a Four Volume Edition in Hardback with Large print which also contains the King James Version of the New Testament in the Fourth Volume that you can compare with Jay P. Green Sr’s Literal Translation. A word of note. Mr Green translates the Greek word Ekklesia as “church” in this version of the Literal Translation and underneath the Greek, but “assembly” in his more updated Literal Translation.

Rightly Dividing The Word – Rules For Interpreting The Bible (William Parker)

Christ crucified is the true key to unlocking the truth of God’s Word. He said as much when He confronted the pharisees – “Search the Scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and THEY ARE THEY WHICH TESTIFY OF ME” (John 5:39). That being said, we must also understand that God has given His people minds and the power of reasoning so that when we are driven and directed by the Holy Spirit to search for truth in His written Word, we must diligently and responsibly use proper rules for interpreting the Bible. Start with this book brethren. Highly recommended.

Sketches of Jewish Social Life in the Days of Christ (Alfred Edersheim)

Alfred Edersheim’s well-researched account of everyday Jewish life at the time the New Testament Gospels took place remains one of the best texts on the subject ever authored. This edition includes the authors appendixes.

The reader is taken back to Israel and the surrounding areas more than 2,000 years ago. How the society would appear to the casual traveler, what customs the people practiced, how everyday life proceeded in the Jewish homestead and towns, and how women were treated are topics which Edersheim examines. The author goes into much detail, presenting an evocative picture of a sophisticated society.

We also hear of the political landscape of the era, particularly concerning the Pharisees – the leading social and political movement of the time – and its interactions with rival movements such as the Sadducees and Essenes. Religious rites, the layout and ceremonies of ancient Jewish synagogues and temples, and the creation of the ancient religious Talmudic literature, are related.

The Temple – Its Ministry and Services as They Were at the Time of Jesus Christ (Alfred Edersheim)

This book takes the reader back to the times when the Lord Jesus passed through the streets of Jerusalem, and the Sanctuary, when He taught in its porches and courts; to portray, not only the appearance and structure of the Temple, but to describe its ordinances and worshippers, the ministry of its priesthood, and the ritual of its services. The author seeks not only to illustrate a subject, in itself most interesting to the Bible-believer, but also chiefly, to sketch, in one important aspect, the religious life of the period in which our blessed Lord Jesus lived upon earth, the circumstances under which He taught, and the religious rites by which He was surrounded; and whose meaning, in their truest sense, He came to fulfil.

Galatians: The Biblical Precept of Freedom (Tim James)

Nowhere is the claim to desire freedom so thoroughly denied by people’s actions than in the sphere of religion. All religions, while claiming to set people free, instead multiply rules and restrictions. For this reason, almost all sermons on the believer’s freedom spend more time hedging that freedom with warnings against sin than actually setting people free. But the Lord said, “If the Son shall make you free, you are free indeed.” In the book of Galatians, Paul made a clear and powerful argument for the freedom of the believer. In this commentary, the author breaks the chains of bondage that many have put on this book: he sets the Book of Freedom free! With unassailable argument, he sets forth the radical freedom that is the possession of every believer, shows why believers can be trusted with that freedom, and unfolds that it is only in the context of this freedom that they can truly express the fruit of the Spirit—showing Christ and His Cross is the reason. Read it, believe it, and be free.

Select Writings of Samuel Trott – Volume 1 (Samuel Trott)

Samuel Trott was a firm Predestinarian, an Exalter of Christ Alone, and one who contended in earnest for that “faith once delivered unto the saints.” Along with Gilbert Beebe, he was one the most influential teachers of that group of Particular Baptists which came to be known as “Old School.” With this volume of Trott’s Writings, as selected from the Signs of the Times, it is hoped, under the blessing of the LORD, to attempt to establish afresh, a renewed evaluation and appreciation, of the writings of one who faithfully served his generation, in setting forth the Glories of Christ’s Redemption-Grace; not only to those who were privileged to know him personally, but to many subsequent generations of Christ minded believers; even to this dark day, wherein the Essential Truths of the Gospel are, for the most part thrown aside, or trampled underfoot by men whose minds have been corrupted from the simplicity or singleness that is in Christ.

An Antidote Against Arminianism (Christopher Ness)

The real antidote Against Arminianism (Undiluted, Uncompromised, Unfiltered and Restored in to hardcover after 300 years) or A Succinct Discourse to Enervate and Confute all the Five Points thereof. From the scope of the entire book, it is apparent that Ness thoroughly understood and taught that the teachings known as Arminianism were not merely theological errors, not just a weaker gospel, nor just an interpretive viewpoint, but that these teachings distorted the Gospel of Christ to the point that it becomes a different gospel altogether. Those who believe the true Gospel know that these life and death issues lie at the very heart of the Gospel, for if one is an Arminian Conditionalist, he is dead in trespasses and sins; as those in Christ, believe in a salvation that is conditioned on His saving merits alone.

Sparkles of Glory (John Saltmarsh)

Sparkles of Glory, or some beams of the Morning-Star; wherein are many discoveries as to truth, and peace, to the establishment, and pure enlargement of a Christian in Spirit & Truth. Printed in 1647. John Saltmarsh, 1612-1647, studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Around 1643 he began to voice his fundamental opposition to all empty forms of the Established Church, having given up his living at Heslerton because of his principles against tithe-taking. Early in 1645, he took appointment as Rector of Brasted, in Kent, but refused the income. In the last three years of his life Saltmarsh established himself in positions that made him a favorite target of the Presbyterian supporters who wanted nothing more but to see him imprisoned. He became known as a vigorous advocate of religious toleration and liberty of conscience, of Free and Sovereign Grace, and a loyal supporter of Cromwell’s New Model Army. About June 1646 Saltmarsh became an Army Chaplain to the forces of General Fairfax.

A Defense of Particular Redemption (William Rushton)

No work stands so tall in the defense of the redemptive work of Christ that we find in the Scriptures as this one. William Rushton, using nothing but the Word of God, earnestly contends for the faith once delivered to the saints. The Lord Jesus said, “I lay down my life for the sheep.” Paul says, He “purchased the church with His own blood.” But long before that God spoke through the prophet Isaiah and said, “For the transgression of my people was he stricken.” The redemption that is in Christ Jesus is particular and successful. Christ saves all His people from their sins!

Robert Hawker preached for over 40 years in Plymouth, England. His clear and honest dealing with the scriptures exalt Jesus Christ and Him crucified as the Saviour of His people. As the angel said, His name is called Jesus, “for He shall save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)

Unanswered Prayer (G.D. Buss)

This treatise by Gerald D. Buss, shepherd of Christ’s flock at Chippenham, England, is sent forth in the prayerful hope that it may be of help to some of the Lord’s people who have to say with Jeremiah, “Also when I cry and shout, He shutteth out my prayer.”

It does not profess to give all the answers, but addresses several reasons why God does not answer such as: We do not need an answer; There is some secret evil God will not disregard; We do not ask in faith; Not asking for the right reasons; God’s time has not come; He has some better thing for us; and many others.

The God-given privilege of prayer can never be overestimated. However, many believers become discouraged because some of their prayers seem to go unanswered and as a result their faith in the Lord Jesus is sometimes tested.

The author, in seeking to address some of the difficulties that this trial of faith poses, exhorts and encourages the reader to pray on because the Lord does regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer (Psalm 102:17).

Free Grace, Free Will and the Free Offer (J.H. Gosden)

Free grace, free will and the free offer examined in the light of scripture.

The principle part of this book is taken from the 1941 Gospel Standard. In it, Gosden refutes the charge old “Hyper-Calvanism” levelled at those who deny the false doctrine of the free offer of grace. Furthermore he demonstrates that those who advocate these things are in danger of denying total depravity and sinful impotence, as well as violating divine election and particular redemption. This little book is the perfect answer to the Fullerites who are still to this day slandering the saints and accusing them of believing and teaching things that no one believes.

While clearly contending against indiscriminate offers of Christ to all. Mr. Gosden makes it clear that in no way does this inhibit us in preaching the gospel. He himself was a gospel preacher, and his description of the gospel preacher could well have been written of himself.

“With what gladness, burning zeal, fervent desire, intense longings, and anxious concern does a minister of Christ endeavour to set forth Christ in His Person and work. His quenchless love in dying, the Just for the unjust, that the blackest and vilest convicted sinner may receive and embrace Him by faith.”
(Page 9)

Mr. Gosden makes it clear that he deplores unscriptural “Hyper-Calvinism,” harsh statements on the divine decrees, and above all fatalism. The last section of the book deals with God-dishonouring fatalism, a dreadful evil.

Line Upon Line (Tommy Robbins)

“Line Upon Line” contains the writings of brother Tommy Robbins, having been written over a period of 17 years. While Tommy now sits at the throne of the Lamb singing a new song to perfection, it is the same song which he labored to sing in the writings of this book. The love that constrained him in his writing shows a profound insight in exposing the things of Christ and the peace of the believer found in Him. Expecting only those of the congregation where he labored to read his writing, he faithfully worked week-in and week-out to “lay precept upon precept; Line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little” (Isaiah 28:10) to comfort God’s people, and to “cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’s hand double for all her sins” (Isaiah 40:1).

A young man called Thomas Bradbury was chosen for this work, with no formal theological training, but deeply taught of God in his own soul.

Sukey Harley (Jane Gilpin)

Sukey was born in about 1784, near the Longmynd hills in Shropshire, into a family of sixteen children. Losing her father when very young, she grew up a wilful, unruly, illiterate girl, given to swearing and ready to join in any froliking. Early in her married life, the sover, gracious witness of two of her neighnours had a great effect on her – she could see tuat they possessed something she was a stranger to. God used this witness, and she longed to know their God as her own; a desire which God wonderfully fulfilled. Very touching are her accounts how the Lord taught her to read, and how He delivered her when her cottage was burnt to the ground. This book follows Sukey through her pilgrimage; much of it as seen through her own eyes and spoken by her own lips. Indeed the gracious, guileless simplicity of her account, even in the confessions of her mistakes, will make it attractive to those who like her have to say, “By the grace of God, I am what I am.”

Valiant For Truth: Memoirs and Letters of J.K. Popham (J.H. Gosden)

J.K. Popham (1847 – 1937) was a preacher of the gospel for 70 years. He was a shepherd of Christ’s flock in Brighton for over 55 years. He was editor of the Gospel Standard magazine from 1907-1937 and also the editor of the Friendly Companion for 16 years. Beside being a preacher of the gospel, we believe he also had a gift from the Lord Jesus as a writer and teacher. In the last thirty years of his life he became an exceptionally able leader among the assemblies known as Gospel Standard. His writings dealt with many of the controversial issues of the times, such as the Arminianism, or rather the false gospel of the Sankey and Moody campaigns, and the subject of the relationship between divine sovereignty and man’s responsibility. This book contains a very well written Introductory Essay by J.R. Broome who was also a faithful servant of Jesus Christ who I had the pleasure of meeting many years ago. In the foreward written by brother B.A Ramsbottom, he states “Mr John Broome, in his introductory essay, has shown that reading Mr. Popham’s life is not just an academic exercise. It has vital relevance to things today.” James Popham by the grace of God, I believe, was certainly valiant for the truth, and I highly recommend this book.

Servants of the Living God (Graham Chewter)

Beginning with the turbalent Separatist and Puritan days, through the Victoria era of gospel progress, to days of spiritual decline of the twentieth century, this book provides an insight into the influence of the gospel which is “the power of God unto salvation.” Whether pilgrims searching for freedom of worship, a rich nobleman who befriended and supported gospel preachers and supplied bibles for young people, a weaver, a bootmaker, a miller or an iron foundry worker, all were motivated to make sacrifices for the cause of Christ and served Him faithfully in their days and generation. ‘Servants of the Living God’ recounts their lives, circumstances, trials and blessings, with the desire that the reader will also be constrained to serve the living God.

A fascinating, yet deeply spiritual recollection of the life of the wife of Herbert Dawson. His own writings, also included, combine to make this a powerul memory of God’s goodness and a deep source of encouragement to all who, under the constrainings of the love of Christ, take up a cross for His sake. This autobiographical work was compiled by brother G.D. Buss.

Sydney Frank Paul – A Pillar In The Church (Matthew J. Hyde)

Little known outside his circle, Sydney Frank Paul (1883-1971) was a remarkable servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. For many years he faithfully served as deacon at the assembly meeting at Galeed chapel, Brighton. When he retired from work at the age of 60, he gave the remainder of his life to serving the wider ‘Gospel Standard’ group of assemblies. He edited the magazines circulated among those assemblies and wrote over 30 books. In all these roles Mr Paul was a shining example of grace in exercise, humulity, commitment and love.

This book contains a biography of Mr Paul, together with a record of his spiritual leadings as written by himself. These are supplemented with samples of his writings, a record of grace in his wider family, and a collection of family art and photographs. There is much lethargy and ease today, and few men and women who stand out as pillars in the church. The book call us to ask whether we are faithfully serving the LORD in our day. It reminds the saints of the lack of servants like Mr Paul. May it promote prayer and exercise in the heart of the reader that the LORD would yet favour Zion with true deacons like Mr Paul.

A Prodigal Made A Blessing (Compiled by John A. Kingham)

The Life and Hymns of Joseph Hart.

Born into a godly family in the year 1712, Joseph Hart had many advantages in his upbringing. He was very gifted and early in life was teaching classical languages and literature. He also became deeply concerned about his soul and eternity, and after a while the LORD was pleased to grant him the comfort of His salvation. This happy state did not last; he fell deeply into sin and it was not till many years later that he was brought into true godly sorrow and repentance, and to a gracious knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. He began to write hymns, which deeply reflect his own experience, both in sorrow and in joy; the first volume was published about two years after what he calls his “reconversion”. These have been made a special blessing to the church of God, and even today there are few hymn books without any of his sense.

This book has been compiled in the hope of reviving the memory of the man who, in his last years, was made such a blessing. Apart from an account of Hart’s life and book contains all of his hymns, the only extant letter that he wrote, and the only known recorded sermon that he preached.

Eschatology

Discovering Christ in Revelation (Don Fortner)

You will never find a perfect commentary on Revelation, and no man can claim to have it all figured out, but this is one of the best I have read. I especially liked all of the later chapters, including the sections on the binding and loosing of Satan, the chapters on heaven, as well as a faithful teaching on Revelation 22:18-19 that every man and woman would do well to consider. This book surprised me, I highly recommend it.

The Revelation of Jesus Christ (Alfred J. Chompff)

Brother Alfred was a friend of mine, and I am thankful to God for the goodbye message he sent me prior to departing to be with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I believe he was a God fearing man, who especially loved the Word of God above most pastors I have known. These two books present a detailed commentary on the Revelation of Jesus Christ. You will find much wisdom in these books to help you in your understanding of eschatological events. The sections that you may find particularly helpful are the studies on Revelation chapters 9-13 and Revelation chapters 17-20. These 2 volumes are also available in paperback.
