Preached by William Gadsby, at Attleborough, Warwickshire, on Wednesday, June 15th, 1842. “For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.” (Hebrews 10:36) As the LORD shall direct me, I shall endeavour: I. To make a remark or two on the promise. There is one great object set before us—“the promise.” II. Endeavour to enter a little into the solemn business… Read More

“When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:4) If Christ be your life upon earth; if you have a living faith in His Divine Majesty; if any drops of His love have ever bedewed your soul; if any sweet smile has ever comforted your heart, the Apostle would say to all such, “When Christ, who is your life, shall appear with all His… Read More

“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1) When the Lord Himself “was reviled, He reviled not again.” We need to learn this well. When someone lashes out at you, don’t lash back. It never accomplishes anything and only worsens the situation. In the heat of conflict much is said that is not meant and is later regretted. If only we could bite our tongues. Someone once said: “If… Read More

“When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2) Whoever becomes lifted up with pride, for whatever reason, you can count on it, they will be brought down. God hates pride more than anything, for what do we have that we have not received? All talent, beauty, knowledge and strength is “given from above.” That one who takes credit for what was given them will most assuredly be “put to shame.” The proud, beautiful… Read More

The doctrines we preach and love are not mere teachings of some particular method of plan, but the doctrines of Christ, who is our Gospel; Christ, who is sovereign over all flesh; Christ, whose grace is both sovereign and free. Not to preach a sovereign Christ is to preach another Christ. To preach another Christ is to preach another gospel “Which is not another” (Galatians 1:6-9). It is just that simple. Mark it down:… Read More

The common delusion of the day in which we live is to think of and speak of Christ as if He were merely a Saviour who had done all He could to save all mankind, but after all, had left it quite uncertain whether any will be eventually saved; whereas, His official character (Prophet, Priest, King, Messiah, Redeemer, Mediator, Covenant Head, Surety, LORD), and consequent covenant engagements, render the salvation of all… Read More

“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7) The father of the children is the spiritual leader of his home and it is his responsibility to teach the… Read More

Let us correct our attitude toward getting older. Believers must not allow the carnal thinking of this world to form our opinions and attitudes. The reason so much emphasis is placed on youth, physical strength and beauty, riches and possessions is because this is all that the worldling has and when these are gone—all is gone! Actually age, while it mars outward beauty, should bring us real lasting beauty—which is inward grace, mercy and… Read More

We know that Jesus of Nazareth is God because that is what the Word of God says. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) The child born to Mary in Bethlehem is a real child who is also the everlasting… Read More

What will happen in the days to come? Everything the LORD has wisely decreed in His eternal purpose for us to experience (Romans 11:36; Ephesians. 1:11). The LORD gave David these words in Psalm 37:23; “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.” Our Lord Jesus Christ told His disciples in their day; “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have… Read More

Before you think, why ask a question like that when the answer is obvious, hold on. If man has a free-will, it means it is free from God’s will. If man’s will is free, and can trump God’s will, then man’s will is sovereign over God’s will. The belief in free will makes man a sovereign and God’s will subject to man’s will. That makes man big and God small. That makes… Read More

If I were to ask the question: “What is your definition of a preacher?” I am sure I would receive many different descriptions, and most of them unfavorable. Most so-called preachers in this generation have given this “profession” a bad reputation. Most are a laughing stock to this generation – and rightfully so, for much of what I see and hear from them is as ridiculous as some comedy show. I am… Read More

Whatsoever is good for God’s children they shall have it, for all is theirs to further them to heaven; therefore, if poverty be good, they shall have it; if disgrace be good, they shall have it; if trials be good, they shall have them; if misery be good, they shall have it; for all is ours, to serve for our greatest good. R. Sibbes

“But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.” (Acts 20:24) I often hear people saying that someone “has gone into the ministry” or that they have some kind of specific ministry. A minister is simply a servant…. Read More

“Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice…”(1st Kings 18:38) There was a day appointed by God Himself that He ordained to make His power, presence and will known. On this day He would display His power to the people in Elijah’s day because of their double-mindedness. According to HIS WORD, the answer was to be made by fire. Fruitlessly the false prophets of Baal had called on… Read More

“It is Christ that died.” (Romans 8:34) Who Christ died for is an issue because Christ makes it an issue.  “I am not sent but to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” “I lay down My life for the sheep.” “Christ loved the church, and gave Himself for it.” “I pray not for the world, but for them which Thou hast given Me.”  That being said, the greater issue is… Read More

Scriptures Alone The Bible is the Word of God (1st Timothy 3:16.) All Scripture is given by inspiration of God. It contains no error whatsoever. We do not derive our doctrine from men or denominations. The Bible is our rule of faith and practice. “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this Word, it is because there is no light in them.” (Isaiah 8:20) Christ Alone Christ is… Read More

“What shall we say then that Abraham our father as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?” (Romans 4:1) These are the words the Holy Spirit uses to begin Romans 4, the chapter that defines to us what faith is. And the question He asks is, “What did Abraham find?” Did he find out that he would be saved if he met certain conditions that would lead to his salvation? Did he find out that salvation was… Read More

“The peace of God which passeth all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7) Usually, this verse is thought to mean that the peace of God is too great to be understood. Surely there is some truth to that, for the peace of God is a miracle of grace in the heart ministered by the Holy Spirit. Like everything else our God does, it is unsearchable and… Read More

Some men like to identify themselves after a 500-year-old religious movement. They call themselves and their gospel, “Reformed”. Much could be said about the futility of trying to reform error. Be that as it is, let us rejoice that our gospel is infinitely older than 500 years. Let us seek our LORD, not in the opinions of “reformers”, but in the inspired word of God. Let us prove what is the acceptable… Read More

The longer I live, the more I feel that if there were one thing left undone, if the devil were not conquered, sin not expiated, justice not satisfied, the law not honored and magnified, death not overcome and every burden not carried that I should not have a ray of hope. I used to think I saw this as clear as the noon day thirty or forty years ago but I saw… Read More

“Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works.” (Romans 4:6) This righteousness, which is here said to be without works is the obedience of Jesus Christ which is the justifying righteousness of a sinner and is so complete in itself that nothing can be added to it to make it more so. All the works of the creature since the fall are imperfect and… Read More

“Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.” (Deuteronomy 29:4) These Phrases, an Heart to perceive, Eyes to see, and Ears to hear, mean an Ability, in a spiritual manner, to discern, receive, and delight in spiritual Things, because of their Excellency and Glory. Such a Perception, Embracement of, and Pleasure in heavenly Things, are intended, as issue in… Read More

Listen to what David said in his last inspired words: “Although my house be not so with God, yet He hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although He make it not to grow.” (2nd Samuel 23:5) Mark these two words and may God seal them home to your hearts with saving and precious power. “Although” – describes what my house… Read More

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25) By God’s all-wise appointment, our assemblies are the life, the food, and the nourishment of our souls. It is the main way whereby we publicly identify with Christ and His Gospel. We evidence our love for Christ by our loyalty and support of… Read More

The word justify is never used in a physical sense for producing any real change in men but in a forensic sense and stands opposed (not to a state of impurity and unholiness) but to a state of condemnation. It is a law term used of judicial affairs, transacted in a court of judicature; (Deuteronomy 25:1; Proverbs 17:15; Isaiah 5:22; Matthew 12:37) where justification stands opposed to condemnation. This is the sense of the word whenever it is used… Read More

“Be sure your sin will find you out.” (Numbers 32:23) Is there an honest believer anywhere that does not worry about this verse? Is there an honest child of God, who knows their own sinfulness, who does not worry that they are going to be exposed by God someday . . . punished . . . cast out? But listen to this Word from the same LORD: “In those days, and in that… Read More

Our Divine Redeemer, Whom God the Father highly exalted in consequence of His completing His work as Redeemer Who laid down His own life to pay the ransom price, is a Redeemer that recovers and restores all that He paid a ransom price for. Those who are so foolish as to allow ANYTHING IN THEIR LIFE to cause them to renounce their faith in Christ and neglect their duty and privileges as children of the living God will, like Esau, someday weep with bitter tears when it is beyond their power to recover what is lost. “Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.” (Deuteronomy 5:12) There are many professing Christians who claim that the observance of the Sabbath (the day of rest) is still a duty and requirement today because it is part of the Ten Commandments. Some believe this claim either for Saturday (the original Hebrew observance) or Sunday for their day of Sabbath. However, a larger question than the… Read More

INEVITABLE The death of the believer is inevitable.  “Thou SHALT come to thy grave.” Because of sin, death has passed upon all. All men must die and be buried, believers and unbelievers. 2…. At the cross we see sin in its blackest colors and holiness in its fairest beauties. At the cross we see the Love of God in… Read More

Here is the fundamental difference between the man of faith and the man of unbelief. The unbeliever is “of the world”, judges everything by worldly standards, views life from the standpoint of time and sense, and weighs everything in the balances of his own carnal making. But the man of faith brings in God, looks at everything from His standpoint, estimates values by spiritual standards, and views life in the light of… Read More
