“We Are All As An Unclean Thing”
The desire to be saved from hell is a natural desire motivated by fear and dread of punishment. Nobody wants to burn or spend eternity suffering. The desire to be saved from our sins and ourselves is a spiritual desire, a gift of God, and turns us to Christ. So long as a man thinks he is savable, he will never turn from himself to God.
Oh, but let the spirit of the living God move across his mind and heart and reveal his sinful self, and then watch him flee to Christ for mercy and grace. What is lacking in the preaching of our day is a true declaration of man’s condition before God. “We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” (Isaiah 64:6)
