The Rulers

The standard by which many in Christ’s day measured His claims and His doctrine was this: “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?” (John 7:48) It is the same today. There are always “the rulers.” The “fear of man brings a snare” and many are kept from believing the truth as it is in Christ Jesus because of this. Sometimes “the rulers” are old writers and theologians. Sometimes they are preachers, friends, relatives and those nearest and dearest to us. We cannot believe what “thus saith the LORD” for fear of displeasing them, losing their favour or friendship and a host of other things. Only omnipotent grace can bring us to believe the truth and it remains an unchangeable fact: “He that is of God heareth God’s words…” (John 8:47) Everyone loved of God, chosen of God and redeemed of God shall be “taught of God.” “The rulers” have always kept men in bondage and Christ the Truth, with the “word of the truth of the gospel,” alone can set them free. Remember Christ’s words? “How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?” (John 5:44) What has the final appeal with you?
