A Short Study of John 5:39
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me.”
“The scriptures” to which our Lord Jesus was referring was not Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The four gospel narratives had not yet been written. The Master was talking about the Old Testament Scriptures, that is, the writings of Moses, the Psalms and the Prophets.
Surely you see that the Old Testament is much more than a collection of historical records. If that is all there is to the thirty-nine books comprising the Old Testament, how could they ever benefit us spiritually or profit us eternally? Let us see in those Scriptures, through symbolism, picture, typeology and prophesy, the setting forth of the Lord Jesus Christ and the great sacrifice of Himself for the redemption of His people. Christ gives us the key that unlocks the vast treasures and spiritual riches of Genesis through Malachi, “they testify of Me.”
