“Beginning of Sorrows” – Scripture Study

Matthew 24:3 – And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? 

Matthew 24:4 – And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

Matthew 24:5 – For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Matthew 24:6 – And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

Matthew 24:7 – For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

Matthew 24:8 – All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Matthew 24:9 – Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.

Matthew 24:10 – And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

Matthew 24:11 – And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

Matthew 24:12 – And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

Matthew 24:13 – But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Matthew 24:14 – And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.


Mark 13:3 – And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,

Mark 13:4 – Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled? 

Mark 13:5 – And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you:

Mark 13:6 – For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Mark 13:7 – And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet.

Mark 13:8 – For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troublesthese are the beginnings of sorrows.

Mark 13:9 – But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.

Mark 13:10 – And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

Mark 13:11 – But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.

Mark 13:12 – Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.

Mark 13:13 – And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.


Luke 21:8 – And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

Luke 21:9 – But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by.

Luke 21:10 – Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:

Luke 21:11 – And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:12 – But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake.

Luke 21:13 – And it shall turn to you for a testimony.

Luke 21:14 – Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer:

Luke 21:15 – For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.

Luke 21:16 – And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.

Luke 21:17 – And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake.

Luke 21:18 – But there shall not an hair of your head perish. 

Luke 21:19 – In your patience possess ye your souls.


All these are the beginning of sorrows. 

Take heed that no man deceive you, many shall come in my name. (another Jesus)

Ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars.

(1) Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom – House against house, Kingdom of Satan against the Kingdom of God.

(2) famines a scarcity of food

    and troubles ​sedition [rebellion against the government in power]

(3) pestilences ​a plague – disease, or fig. a pest destroying food & causing spiritual illness 

(4) earthquakes ​a commotion of the air, a gale – in divers places

Then the End

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you.

he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. (5th Trumpet, Saints overtaken and killed)

  • “Hail and fire mingled with blood” – (Judgment)
  • “Third part of trees” – (men who seem some what)
  • “Green grass” – (men/people)
  • “Sea” – (World)
  • “Ships” – (Fishers of men – Congregations)
  • “There fell a great star” – (Satan)
  • “Third part of the rivers” – (Gospel)
  • “Fountains of waters” – (Gospel)
  • “Wormwood” – (Bitter Gospel – False Gospel)
  • “Third Part of the Sun” – (Light of the Gospel)
  • “Third Part of the Moon” – (Law)
  • “Third Part of the Stars” – (Children of God)

Revelation 8:7 – The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

Revelation 8:8 – And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

Revelation 8:9 – And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

Revelation 8:10 – And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;

Revelation 8:11 – And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

Revelation 8:12 – And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. 

Revelation 8:13 – And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

Revelation 16:1 – And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

Revelation 16:2 – And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.

Revelation 16:3 – And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man; and every living soul died in the sea.

Revelation 16:4 – And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.

Revelation 16:5 – And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.

Revelation 16:6 – For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

Revelation 16:7 – And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.

Revelation 16:8 – And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.

Revelation 16:9 – And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Revelation 16:10 – And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

Revelation 16:11 – And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

Revelation 16:12 – And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

Revelation 16:13 – And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

Revelation 16:14 – For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

Revelation 16:15 – Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

Revelation 16:16 – And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

Revelation 16:17 – And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

Sorrows

5604. odin, o-deen’; a pang of childbirth:–pain, sorrow, travail. [used 4 times]

Acts 2:22 – Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

Acts 2:23 – Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

Acts 2:24 – Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.


1st Thessalonians 5:1 – But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

1st Thessalonians 5:2 – For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

1st Thessalonians 5:3 – For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

1st Thessalonians 5:4 – But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

1st Thessalonians 5:5 – Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

1st Thessalonians 5:6 – Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.


Psalm 16:1 – Michtam of David. Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

Psalm 16:2 – O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;

Psalm 16:3 – But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

Psalm 16:4 – Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another godtheir drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.

Psalm 16:5 – The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.


Psalm 18:1 – To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD, who spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: And he said, I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.

Psalm 18:2 – The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

Psalm 18:3 – I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Psalm 18:4 – The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

Psalm 18:5 – The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.

Psalm 18:6 – In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

Psalm 18:7 – Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth.

Psalm 18:8 – There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.

Psalm 18:9 – He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet.

Psalm 18:10 – And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.

Psalm 18:11 – He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.

Psalm 18:12 – At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire.

Psalm 18:13 The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

Psalm 18:14 – Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them.

Psalm 18:15 – Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

Psalm 18:16 – He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters.

Psalm 18:17 – He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.

The End

Telos [tel’-os] the conclusion of an act or state end, uttermost.

Hebrews 6:8 – But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.


Matthew 10:16 – Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

Matthew 10:17 – But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;

Matthew 10:26 – Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

Matthew 10:27 – What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.


1st Peter 4:17 – … the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

1st Peter 4:18 – And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

Two Tribulations (One is the Greater – The Little Season)

Matthew 24:15 – When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

Matthew 24:16 – Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Matthew 24:17 – Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

Matthew 24:18 – Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

Matthew 24:19 – And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

Matthew 24:20 – But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

Matthew 24:21 – For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Matthew 24:22 – And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.

Matthew 24:23 – Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

Matthew 24:24 – For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

Matthew 24:25 – Behold, I have told you before.

Matthew 24:26 – Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

Matthew 24:27 – For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:28 – For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together

Matthew 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

Matthew 24:30 – And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Matthew 24:31 – And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Mark 13:21 – And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not: 

Mark 13:22 – For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall show signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.

Mark 13:23 – But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.

Mark 13:24 – But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,

Mark 13:25 – And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.

Mark 13:26 – And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

Mark 13:27 – And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.


Romans 2:8 – But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

Romans 2:9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;


2nd Thessalonians 1:3 – We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

2nd Thessalonians 1:4 – So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

2nd Thessalonians 1:5 – Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

2nd Thessalonians 1:6 – Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

2nd Thessalonians 1:7 – And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,


Revelation 2:18 – And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;

Revelation 2:19 – I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.

Revelation 2:20 – Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

Revelation 2:21 – And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

Revelation 2:22 – Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. 

Revelation 2:23 – And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

Revelation 2:24 – But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.

Revelation 2:25 – But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.

The Beginning of Sorrows – Tribulation

The first four trumpets, God calls the “beginning of sorrows”.

Matthew 24:29 – Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 

[God does not say great tribulation, it is the beginning of sorrows]

Mark 13:24 – But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,

The Sabbath Jubilee – The Great Tribulation

Matthew 24:19 – And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

Matthew 24:20 – But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

Matthew 24:21 – For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.


Revelation 2:22 – Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.


Revelation 7:14 – And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.


Acts 7:11 Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.
