A Short Study of John 16:33
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
The Lord did not shield His disciples from the truth and reality of believers living in a sin-cursed world and in the midst of people who have no love or regard for the Gospel truth. He told them plainly that they would suffer persecution and be outcasts from the world. But He did not tell them these things to cause them to wallow in despair and sorrow. He told them these things to inspire them to look for real and lasting peace and joy, not in the world, and not in their own personal comforts and views of the world. He showed them (and us) that real and lasting peace and joy is only IN HIM and in the love, grace, and mercy of God they possessed because HE HAS OVERCOME THE WORLD and has brought them to faith in Himself and not in themselves or the world. Christ is our peace, our rest, our righteousness, our Surety, and our joy.
Because God has powerfully, graciously, and eternally saved us from our sins by the death of Christ and has given us a perfect righteousness in which we stand justified IN HIS SIGHT, we can be of good cheer as we look to Christ and His Word for our comfort.
When I watch the news on TV or on the internet, I cannot be of good cheer. When I view the religious world with all of its ungodly human inventions, I cannot be of good cheer. As much as I love my earthly family, I cannot enter into this real and lasting peace and joy with many of them. But when I look to Christ, read and study His Word, pray to my heavenly Father through Him, fellowship and worship with my brethren in Christ, I can be of good cheer. Christ has overcome the world.
