A Short Study of Philippians 4:19
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
(Philippians 4:19)
——————–
Men by nature possess endless desires. Our desire for emotional stimulation causes us to lust with our eyes, our flesh, and for the pride of life. However, though men have many desires, their needs can only be met in Christ, for without Christ:
1) We have no sin-bearer.
2) We have no fit righteousness.
3) We have no mediator between ourselves and God Almighty.
4) We have no hope of glory.
Our wants by nature are carnal and selfish, but our needs are spiritually supplied only by God.
He alone removes a heart of stone (Ezekiel 36:26) and imparts a heart of flesh (a new nature).
By His grace, we are kept from that which we carnally want (to flee from God) and given that which we need – Christ!
When Paul was sitting in a Roman prison for preaching the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, he lacked the necessities that he needed to maintain his physical strength. The believers at Phillipi found out about Paul’s deplorable circumstances and sent relief to him by the hand of their servant. Having received the gift from them, he wrote back to them saying, “I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God” (Philippians 4:18). Paul also assured them that the Almighty God would take care of all their need, “My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)
Believer, although we have a great need for all spiritual blessings, to ascend and to stand in God’s presence (Psalm 24:3), we can fully rest in this and many other precious promises of our Lord Jesus Christ that He will meet all our need. Not according to our puny efforts of religious work, but rather according to His riches in glory by Jesus Christ (Romans 8:32). Although we are poor and needy sinners, yet the Lord thinketh upon us (Psalm 40:17).
We have a great need of pardon and forgiveness from all our sins (Romans 3:23). The Lord Jesus Christ is ready to abundantly pardon His people from all their sin, because He paid all our indebtedness to God’s offended justice and put away our sin by the sacrifice of Himself (Nehemiah 9:17; Isaiah 55:6-7; Jeremiah 50:20; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 9:26).
We have a great need of righteousness (Isaiah 64:6). Men before and after regeneration and conversion have no ability to perform or produce a righteousness that is well pleasing and acceptable unto God. But thank God, He does not ask us to produce a righteousness, but rather to receive the Lord Jesus Christ by God given faith, Who is the believer’s righteousness (Jeremiah 23:5; Philippians 3:9). Blessed is the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works (Romans 4:6).
We have a great need of salvation (Hebrews 2:3). Our blessed Lord and Saviour came into this world to accomplish salvation for His people (Matthew 1:21). His blood atonement at Calvary was not a payment for some of the sin of all people, nor for all of the sin of all people, but rather a full payment for all of the sin of some people, His elect (Hebrews 2:17). It is clearly taught throughout the scriptures that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished eternal salvation for the people God gave Him in the eternal covenant of grace (Isaiah 53:8; John 10:15; John 19:30; Acts 20:28).
Every spiritual need that we have, our great Supplier and Shepherd is able to abundantly provide for us, freely, fully and forever (Psalm 23; Ephesians 1:3; 3:20)!
In a day where men preach a “health and wealth message” that claims that God desires all to be healthy and financially prosperous, I find it enlightening that the scriptures declare that God shall supply all our “NEED,” not greed. Did you notice that the word “need,” is singular not plural? This need that God supplies is talking about one thing in particular. I find it equally enlightening that our Lord declared that, “there is only one thing NEEDFUL.” (Luke 10:42) Here we see that God’s riches in glory are “by Christ Jesus?” Jesus Christ is the one thing needful. If I have Jesus Christ, I have everything that I need in order to be found perfectly holy and righteous before God. There are no greater riches to be found than that.
