David and Goliath

The account of David and Goliath has been a favorite children’s Bible story. Here a young man in the face of danger, armed with only a sling and five smooth stones, defeats a monument of resistance.

I am sure that the story’s practical application has been taught in many a sincere Bible class. But, we must reveal the Gospel truths behind the story for it to be profitable to the sinner.

David, a picture of Christ, defeated Goliath, a picture of my sinful nature and its opposition to God Almighty. We see David as a picture of Christ because:

1) He wrought victory as a humble servant. (Philippians 2:8)

2) He did it alone. (Isaiah 63:3)

3) He did it with one mighty blow. (Hebrews 10:11-13)

4) He did it with the strength of his own hand. (Ephesians 4:8)

5) He did it as a representative and substitute for all his people. (John 10:11)

6) In all Scripture, Christ is revealed (John 5:39) to the glory of God the Father, Son, and Spirit and for the good of all His elect.
