“Christ Is Made Unto Us…”
“But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.”
(I Corinthians 1:30)
According to the Scriptures, those who are in Christ Jesus our Lord by divine election, certainly have no reason to boast nor to brag.
It is not because of any merit or righteousness found in them, but simply by His sovereign choice, “but of Him are ye in Christ Jesus.”
Those who are in Christ according to God’s sovereign grace are blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly things in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 1:3). In this verse the Apostle mentions four of these spiritual blessings:
Wisdom – Righteousness – Sanctification – Redemption
1. Our Lord is made unto us Wisdom!
We are foolish and blind by nature concerning the spiritual things of God. We have no spiritual appetite nor desire to learn anything from God because of our fallen, depraved and sinful nature. The natural man will not receive the things of God (1 Corinthians 2:14). However, when God is pleased to reveal the gospel unto us and do a work of grace within us, our Lord is made unto us the very wisdom of God. In Christ are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. In Christ we see and understand the mysteries of the gospel, how God can be just and the justifier of the ungodly (Romans 3:26).
2. Our Lord is made unto us Righteousness!
We are guilty and obnoxious before the holy justice of God. Our Lord is made unto the believer the very satisfying righteousness before God’s throne. Christ Jesus completely and perfectly honored the Law of God on our behalf and satisfied every precept and bore every penalty, thereby earning for His people a perfect and justifying righteousness before God (Romans 4:6). He is the Lord our Righteousness, in Him we are complete (Colossians 2:9-l0; Jeremiah 23:6).
3. Our Lord is made unto us Santification!
We have a vile and ungodly nature within us received from our sinful parents (Romans 5:12). Our Lord has sovereignly given us a new holy nature, “Christ in you the Hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). This is not the remaking of the old-sinful nature, but the implanting of a new nature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
4. Our Lord is made unto us Redemption!
We were in bondage to our sin nature, to God’s holy law and to eternal death. Our blessed Lord by His mighty grace set us free from the bondage of sin (Romans 8:1), from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13) and from spiritual death (John 5:21). He is our Deliverer (Romans 11:26) and Redeemer from all spiritual bondage (Job 33:24). He has set us free through the power of His effectual sacrifice at Calvary (Ephesians 1:7).
