A Short Study of Luke 14:33

In vain do we claim to be saved if the world still rules our heart.

Divine grace not only delivers from the wrath to come, but even now effectually “teaches” its recipients to deny all “ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world” (Titus 2:12).

Our Lord says, “Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33).

That is, to turn away from all that stands in competition (for our affections) with the Lord Jesus, he cannot be a follower of Christ.

  1. Election delivers from the wrath to come (Matt.25.34). Goats foresake all, but where did they get them (Matt.25.41,44)? Salvation is not of works, not what we can do, but of what the Lord does, making sheep to be what they are before the foundation of the world.
