Should a Christian Consider Being a Member of a Labour Union?

Labour unions exist in the workplace because it is the labour unions which are trying to get better working conditions or a better salary for the employees for the company. That is called collective bargaining.

But the problem for the believer, if they become a member of the labour union is when the labour union finally decides that they cannot come to an agreement with the company and they decide to strike.

The employee who is a child of God would then have a real problem on their hands because if they were to strike they would be rebelling against their master (employer). He works for that company and to rebel against the company is contrary to the Word of God.

It is one thing to engage in collective bargaining as long as it is done in an honest and upright manner in order to arrange for better working conditions and so forth but the moment you go on strike and you are on the picket line, then you would be in active rebellion, and a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ should not do that.

Refusing to rebel against one’s employer in the case of a strike if a christian were a member of a labour union, would also mean that he would then be getting himself into trouble with the union, and for this reason we strongly advise christians not to join any labour unions.

The following passages of Holy Scripture are the guidelines that every child of God should prayerfully seek follow in the work place.

Ephesians 6:5
Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

Ephesians 6:6
Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

Ephesians 6:7
With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:

Ephesians 6:8
Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.

And again, in Colossians we read:

Colossians 3:22
Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

I Timothy 6:1
Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.

Titus 2:9
Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters.

I Peter 2:18
Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.

  1. Disagree with this since Unions are in accordance with the judicial system and doesn’t conflict with it. The higher authority is the government which keeps us all on the the same page. To just strike would outside the confines of our agreement and the law. We aren’t rebelling in fact we are within our orderly rights in the United States. This I believe doesn’t conflict with the Word of God since our “masters” are in fact the Government which keeps it’s order.Back in the 1st century even “masters” had to abide by Roman law.
