A Short Study of Isaiah 45:20
“Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.”
Idol worshipers are condemned here; they pray unto gods that cannot save.
What a contrast to the one true and living God. Psalm 115 speaks of idols as having eyes, but not seeing, having ears, but not hearing, having hands but not doing.
Believer in Jesus Christ, your prayers are quite different from these hopeless ones. Not because you are better, but because of the superiority of your God. Jehovah does see the condition and need of His people. He does faithfully and lovingly hear their cries. He is able to reach down and work on their behalf. Furthermore, unlike the lifeless idols, He has a heart that cares deeply for His covenant people. He has wisdom that knows what is best for them.
In short, our God can and does save!
The effectiveness of our prayers will largely depend upon our view of the One to whom we are praying. Ponder again today the saving God in whom you trust.
