“Beware of Covetousness”

“And He said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
(Luke 12:15)

Often we hear statements like, “He has really done well in life” or “She has really gone far in life!” In the world’s eyes, “well” and “going far” are often determined by a lucrative career, standard of living, or other similar attainments. Human nature puts much value on a person by these types of achievements. Jesus teaches us something quite different about the true nature of a successful life.

While it is not wrong to do well in one’s career or even to earn a lot of money, this is not to be the barometer of success for a Christian. Jesus plainly says that our life does not consist in what we have. A covetous spirit says, “I’ll be happy when I get this or that” or “I must have this or that.” A Holy Spirit influenced mind says, “I have Christ. Regardless of whether or not I have a few extras, I’m still okay.”

What is a successful life?

One that is more desirous of being rich toward God (Luke 12:21) than self. One that would rather be increasing in a life of service to God than increasing in stuff (Luke 12:31). Finally, one that considers God to be a far greater treasure than the inferior competition of the world (Luke 12:34).

According to this value system, are you living well?
