A Study of 1st Timothy 2:5
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
(I Timothy 2:5)
This is one of the foundational truths of Holy Scripture. A mediator is a go-between. He is one who brings about peace between two parties that have been at odds.
Why is there a need for a mediator between God and men?
Sin separates man from God, creates a breach and division between holiness and culpable sinners.
But, God has provided and appointed a mediator to bring about peace between Him and His chosen people. This appointed mediator is Jesus Christ. He does not bring about peace by sweet-talking or bringing both parties to a compromise. He doesn’t bring God’s standard of justice down and then ask man to give a little more righteousness on his end so that a deal can be reached. Rather, He brings about peace by satisfying God’s justice for the wrongs which these sinners have done. By His sacrifice on the Cross and obedience, which He imputes to our account, we are made righteous and accepted before God.
A successful mediation has been obtained by Christ and God is at peace with His people!
Let us emphasize that there is but one mediator, one go-between. Some believe that to have access to God, we must go through some human being, a priest, clergyman, etc. Somehow, the belief seems to be that these “holy men” have better access to God than do we. It is true in the Old Testament, that only the priests could enter the house of God and offer sacrifices.
But in this wonderful New Testament age, the doors have been opened for all of God’s people (who are all declared kings and priests – I Peter 2:5) to have free access to God through Jesus Christ!
The writer of Hebrews declared that since we have a great High Priest, Jesus Christ, who is in heaven representing us, let us come boldly to the throne of grace, that we receive mercy and grace from God (Hebrews 4:14-16).
Rejoice, believer! You have access to God by Christ.
