A Study of Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
“For the wages of sin is death”: many of us work and receive a paycheck – a money payment for our work: these are our “wages”.
The “wages” – payment that we deserve for our sins is death – eternal damnation – we (apart from God) are dead spiritually – the Bible calls this “dead in sins” (spiritually dead; read Ephesians 2:5).
Because of sin we all (unless the Lord returns first) will die, and everyone who lived before us has died:
And as it is appointed unto men once to die…
Unless the Lord comes first, all 6-7 billion sinners on the earth living today will die!
So apart from God’s intervention in our life: we are dead spiritually and will die physically.
Do you have pains and problems in your physical body?
It’s all because of sin. And apart from the “gift of God” we die what the Bible calls the “second (2nd by number not time) death” – which is not dead meaning you know no existence; it means never ending wrath (judgment without ANY mercy) from God – this is the wages due our sins:
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life (amongst God’s chosen elect) was cast into the lake of fire. (eternal death; eternal damnation)
“But”: thank God for the “but”:
“…the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
(Romans 6:23 – our text).
The gift God is speaking of is defined: “eternal life” – how?
“through Christ Jesus our Lord”. God is clearly teaching that He gives a gift (it can’t be earned – it’s a gift)
What is the gift?
What is “eternal life”?
And this is life eternal, that they (God’s elect – read John 17:1-2) might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
How is this gift of eternal life given?
“through Jesus Christ our Lord” – Christ paid the wages of sin – death due His people’s sins (those written in the book of life); and the Bible teaches Christ was resurrected again because He saved His people at the cross:
Who (Christ) was delivered for our offences (the wages due the elect’s sins), and was raised again for our justification. (because He saved His people at the cross)
Our text is teaching: that the wages due sin is death – eternal damnation; but the gift of God is salvation through Christ ALONE!
I will leave you with one verse which points out that Christ finished salvation for His people- nothing needs to be added. It says what Christ has done in His atonement:
to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness.
Salvation accomplished – by Christ ALONE!
Are you amongst God’s people – His elect?
His people are commanded to make sure:
2 Peter 2:10
Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure (that you have been chosen and called of God throught the gospel): for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
For those of us who are saved (servants of righteousness) we can enjoy this promise in the next verse:
2 Peter 1:11
For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
