“The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.”
God’s words are our foundation of faith and obedience, and God’s words always exalt Christ and Him crucified as the sinner’s only ground and hope of salvation. God’s words always expose our sinfulness and impotence so as to show us no salvation but by His free, sovereign grace in Christ. Whenever preachers deny or diminish the glory and power either of the Person or the finished work of Christ on the cross to redeem and justify His people, they are not preaching God’s words, and their preaching is not by inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Man’s words will exalt the flesh under a guise of grace. They will boldly proclaim what they have done or have been enabled to do by God’s grace, but their focus is on self and experience rather than on Christ and His blood and righteousness. When tested by the scriptures alone, their words are burned up and exposed as lies and deception. The words of God, however, as they lead sinners to Christ, have been tried in a “furnace of earth, purified seven times.”
God’s words never fail, because Christ, the incarnate Word of God, never fails.
