Will We Recognize Our Loved Ones In Heaven?

Will our loved ones recognize us in heaven and remember what we did on earth together?

How much will we remember of this earth when we go to heaven to be with Christ forevermore?

In Isaiah 65 God talks about the new universe in which we will spend eternity with Christ. There we read in verse 17: “Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.”

Now, you can see why that is so. If we could remember what happened on this earth, we would remember our sins, and we would remember our loved ones that never became saved. Not seeing them in heaven would bring great sadness to us. But in the new heaven and the new earth, God says, we are going to have perfect happiness. For that reason, we are going to have a brand new start with the Lord Jesus Christ.

We may not totally lose our identities, however. On the Mount of Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah were still Moses and Elijah. So, we may still know the people that we now know on earth. But our relationship will be altogether different, and we will know them quite differently from the way we know them today. Exactly how all this will work out is beyond our human understanding.
