TULIP is here used as an acronym for the doctrines of grace commonly called “Five points of Calvinism”: Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, irresistible Grace, and Perseverance of the Saints. Each of these five points is here expanded in the context of a foremost premise of Calvinism, “Salvation is of Jehovah” (Jonah 2:9).
I. TOTAL DEPRAVITY:
SALVATION IS NOT OF MAN (Romans 3:10-18-3). Mankind universally is totally depraved: devoid of any righteousness (v.10),ability to understand his plight or the gospel (v.11), ability or desire to seek God and salvation (v.11), or merit or virtue worthy of God’s consideration (v.12). Mankind physically is totally depraved: from his head (vv.13) to his feet (v.15) and throughout (vv.16-18).
II. UNCONDITIONAL ELECTION:
SALVATION IS OF JEHOVAH THE FATHER (Ephesians 1:3-6). God the Father has predestined the salvation of certain sinners by electing them to be holy, the objects of His love, and His adopted children. Their election was unconditional: “according to the good pleasure of His will” (v.5); “to the praise of the glory of His grace” (v,6); “before the foundation of the world” (v.4) – before they even existed; and in no way because (as some suppose) God foresaw they would choose Him (John 15:16).
III. LIMITED ATONEMENT:
SALVATION IS OF JEHOVAH THE SON (Isaiah 53:4-6,8,11). Jesus Christ has made atonement for “many” – not all of mankind (v.11). God identifies the “many” as “My people” – those whom He has chosen to salvation (v.8). God’s elect acknowledge Christ died as their Substitute, and that all for whom He is Substitute shall be healed (vv.4-6).
IV. IRRESISTIBLE GRACE:
SALVATION IS OF JEHOVAH THE SPIRIT (Ezekiel 36:22-28). God does not beg sinners to let Him save them, nor wring His hands if they are unwilling (as some suppose). When He finds His elect people unwilling to follow Him (vv.22-23), He hallows Himself in their eyes (v.23): gathering them out from the nations (v.24), cleansing them through the washing of regeneration (v.25; Titus 3:5), putting a new heart within them (v.26),and irresistibly causing them through His Holy Spirit to follow Him (vv.27).
V. PERSEVERANCE OF THE SAINTS:
SALVATION IS OF JEHOVAH TO THE END (Romans 8:31-39). God’s redeemed and regenerated elect people will persevere all the way to glory because He has promised to give them all His blessings (vv.31),justify them when they are accused (v.33), intercede for them when they are condemned (v.34), never permit them to be separated from Him (vv.35,38), and cause them to be victorious over all their adversities (vv.36).
